What is an overnight sleep study?

An overnight sleep study or polysomnography (PSG) is a non-invasive test that is performed when the presence of a sleep disorder is suspected. All sleep studies are conducted in a private room and do not cause any pain or significant discomfort.

Prior to going to sleep, sensors are placed on the head, face, chest, stomach, legs and fingers.

  • brain wave activity
  • breathing pattern
  • eye movement activity
  • heart rate
  • muscle tone
  • blood oxygen level.

What happens when I come to Northern Sleep Centre?

On the day of your appointment we ask that you report to the main reception of the Northern Private Hospital, 12 Osburn Place, Epping at 6:30pm. This allows ample time to complete hospital admission paperwork, meet staff, settle into the room, fill out pre-test questionnaires and be set up with the monitoring equipment prior to your regular bedtime. It may take a little longer to fall asleep due to the unfamiliar environment. The study concludes between 5.30 – 6.00am the following morning.

Private en-suites are located in each room for showering and a light breakfast will be provided. Your discharge time is usually between 6.30-7.00am.

Sleep Study Results

After the sleep study has been completed, the results will be sent to your sleep physician who will provide treatment recommendations. You need to get in touch with your physician to organise a follow-up appointment and discuss the results of the sleep study.

How much will a sleep study cost?

Most funds cover sleep studies. Please check with your individual health fund provider to see if you are covered for sleep studies. You may be required to pay an excess or co-payment depending on your insurance policy. Northpark Private Hospital will contact you to organise payment prior to your study date.
